Dear Future Client (a Letter from Your Dog Trainer)

Dear Future Client,

Thank you so much for trusting us with your beloved dog! While she’s here with us we will treat her as part of our family. She’ll get to know the human, canine and feline members of my family and team and each of us will take part in her training and/or care. We love getting to know our canine guests!

Your dog will of course be learning lots of new skills while she’s here but perhaps more importantly, she’ll be learning a new way to relate to the humans in her life and a new way to behave in a home environment. This is important for you to know because you will play a crucial role in the last and most important part of her training: the part where she returns home.

I want to reassure you that the changes to your relationship with your dog will lead you both in a very positive direction. Stepping into a leadership role with your dog will help her respect you and listen to your directions. It won’t make your dog fearful or nervous; in fact, knowing that you are the decision maker will lift that burden from her and put her at ease. As you show her that you will handle the worries of the world, she will begin to trust you, and as she follows your lead like never before, you will learn to trust her again, too. Trust and respect—that’s the essence of the bond we’re building.

The changes that we’ll make to your daily flow of life with your dog will be challenging at first—that’s true of any lifestyle adjustment. But I promise you they will be worthwhile! Prior to training most dogs view their homes like their personal dog park: barking when they want, running around when the mood strikes, charging the door, jumping on guests, begging for (or stealing!) food, etc. The training process will reshape your dog’s view of your home so that she thinks of it as more of a relaxation spa than a dog park. We’ll put her new skills to work to teach her that home is a place to relax and calmly enjoy the company of her owners and whomever they invite in. You’ll of course still give her plenty of exercise and play, but you’ll now give your dog more guidance about when, where and how those things happen, too.

Don’t worry: I will be here with you every step of the way during this transition! Think of us as a team. As the trainer, I am the quarterback and I will handle “calling the plays,” but quarterbacks can’t win the game alone no matter how good they are. You and the other members of your household are also valuable members of our dog training team. I will coach you on everything you need to know, and we will work together to make sure your dog’s training is successful over the long haul.

I am so excited to partner with you in the training of your beloved dog! I look forward to meeting you all.

All the best,

Jess and the Sadie’s Rules K9 Training family
